OSCODA, Mich. – At the base of a bluff, near the Au Sable River, pure water flows out of the ground, at a place known as Iargo Springs. Large pools have formed, and one is more than 50 feet across. The waters are crystal clear, making it difficult to judge the actual depth.
The pathway is well maintained, and there are boardwalks that make it easy to wander through the quiet forest. Small wooden bridges cross the streams formed by the springs. This was considered a sacred place by native peoples, and it is easy to understand why. The solitude here is magical. Along with the pure water, and the views across the wetlands, the only sounds you are likely to hear are the wind and the cries of eagles.

Getting there is fun since it entails a beautiful drive along the River Road Scenic Byway. This scenic byway, one of two in Michigan, winds along the course of the Au Sable River, from Oscoda on Lake Huron, west to Route 65. Keep a sharp eye out as you go. The scenery is beautiful, but the sign to Iargo Springs is small. You may be puzzled when you first arrive. All you see is a parking lot. There is a sign stating that you are at the Iargo Springs interpretive site, and there is a kiosk with some photos. But, no springs are in sight.
Near the kiosk is a scenic overlook which offers a stunning view of the Au Sable River. At that point, you will find the boardwalk and stairs which leads to the sacred springs. Be warned – there are about 300 stairs to descend to get to the springs, and that means a long climb back up. The tranquility and beauty of the springs make it worth it. The climb is made more enjoyable by benches where you can pause and rest. At the bottom of the steps the pathway and boardwalk lead to the springs.
This can turn into a full day trip, as there are several other attractions in the immediate area. Just south of Iargo Springs, is the Lumberman’s Monument, which includes an excellent museum and educational programs. There are scenic turnouts all along the River Road.
