DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Staying with the Red Wings after four years, 2018 NHL Entry Draft first round selection Filip Zadina will stay with Detroit for three more years. He signed a three-year contract worth 1.825 million annually.

The 22-year old has played in 74 games recording 24 points on 10 goals and 14 assists. He came to Detroit after playing for the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2017-18. He totaled 82 points in 57 games with 44 goals finishing seventh in scoring. He led the QMJHL rookies in scoring being named to the league’s first All-Star team and All-Rookie Team. That same season he was awarded the Mike Bossy Trophy as the league’s top professional prospect.

Form Pardubice, Czech Republic, he played for his country in the 2018 and 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships. In 2018, he made the WJC All-Star team with seven goals and eight assists. A gold medal came his way in 2016 at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament with seven points in four games. His professional debut came in 2015 with the HC Pardubice in the top Czech professional league.

Detroit is in a rebuilding mode with new head coach Derek Lalonde who was just hired at the beginning of August. Detroit has added a couple free agents and signed back players from last year. Lalonde says, “Obviously, we have a long way to go, but there’s a lot to work with. There’s some things to work with there that really excites me as a coach.”

Detroit opens the regular season on Friday, October 14 vs. the Canadians.
