ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – For the first time since camp started, head coach Jim Harbaugh talked to the media about Michigan’s fall camp. The hot topic is who he will pick to be the starting quarterback in either J.J. McCarthy or Cade McNamara. That question will still remain a question as Harbaugh stayed the course with his answers on that topic as he did at the beginning of camp.

“They both just continue to elevate their game, really, on a daily basis, in every little way. So yeah, it’s pretty, pretty to me,” said Harbaugh. “We’re all out there and seeing the same thing and when it’s when it’ll be obvious to coaches, it would be obvious to players, as well. Or it wouldn’t be or would be what is right now. They both are good. Talk to somebody, Dave Revsine in the Big Ten, Howard Griffith is here, coach is here. Just get their opinion, they watched it. See if I’m not telling you the truth. Check me! They are both playing good. At a high level. Starter caliber.”

Another question that came up was if having two starting caliber quarterbacks is a downside. Harbaugh said, “No, I think that’s one of the real, is when it’s a real option. I mean, there’s three as I see it. One of them is going to separate and be the starter. And then we will roll that way, with the starter, and the backup. The other guy could be the starter and the other be the backup. That would be option two. And option three is we’d have to see them play games to make that decision.”

So Harbaugh continues to play Harbaugh games with the media on where the quarterback situation is going. Could this situation turn into a Brady-Henson from 1999 with the talent from two different players? It possibly could.

“I mean, hypothetically – hypothetically, I don’t know. I mean, it’d be like trying to throw that in the hypothetical box. We have two quarterbacks that are playing at a high-starter level, and we’re going to keep competing and it’s possible that there’s a starter by the first game. And then possible that it plays into the season until one is – then we pick the one that’s gonna help the team win, who’s gonna going to be the best person to play quarterback to win the game,” says Harbaugh.

And again the circus continues around McCarthy and McNamara on who will start. Harbaugh may not know until just before game time with the comments today. Time will tell from what is said.

Halfway through fall camp there are players that have shined and stuck out. Harbaugh mention both Ronnie Bell and Isaiah Gash. Bell is coming off an injury from the 2021 season where he only played one game due to an injury. Gash played in two games as a running back in his first collegiate action after not seeing any playing time in 2020.

“Ronnie Bell has been tremendous. I mean, there’s been a bunch. I won’t start naming names and then I’ll leave somebody out. So by just there’s been quite a few. Ronnie does jump out as somebody that – he’s faster, catching the ball extremely well and he’s stronger. He’s been there every day and doing a tremendous job,” Harbaugh said. “A guy that really popped yesterday, day before yesterday, big scrimmage, was a guy by the name of Isaiah Gash who did a tremendous job. You know why boxers make good football players? They don’t blink. They don’t ever blink. If they blink they’re gonna get hit. So Isaiah boxed all spring and winter he was an amateur boxer. And now we’re watching him run through those holes and is a kick returner. It’s been super fun, impressive. I could see him as somebody that’s really, really emerging.”

Looking at the first week and a half of camp, Michigan is still looking for a quarterback, has a strong wide receiver, and may have a dark horse in Gash. When Harbaugh talks, it is always an adventure, as the game of words is fun to put together and see what he is talking about.
