DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Great pitching by the Detroit staff was over shadowed by a dull offense as the Tigers lost, 1-0, to the Angels. Detroit only allowed three hits and recorded nine strikeouts as Matt Manning struck out six batters in seven innings of work. Manning gave up all three hits and one earned run for his first loss of the year.

Manning retired the side in four of the seven innings pitched with the only big hit coming in the second inning on a solo home run. Joe Jimenez worked the eighth inning retiring the side with a groundout and two strikeouts. Jason Foley came in and retired three straight batters in the ninth with a strikeout.

Four players each had one hit in Willi Castro, Miguel Cabrera, Jeimer Candelario, and Victor Reyes. Castro singled in the first inning but a strikeout and pop out ended the inning. The Angels only run came in the second inning off a solo home run. The third inning started off with a single by Candelario but a double play thwarted any momentum for Detroit.

Cabrera singled to right field to begin the fifth inning but once again a double play ended any chance of Detroit tying the game. Reyes singled in the ninth inning with one out to keep any hopes alive of tying the game but a third double play became the end of the game as Detroit fell by one run.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 1:10 p.m. in Detroit.
