The University of Michigan had their best year of college football since winning a national championship in 2021. One would think that their recruiting class would be in the top five in the nation after knocking off power Ohio State and playing in the college football playoffs. But with that great season, Michigan has yet to capitalize on their success.
One of Michigan’s top committed recruits, 2023 4-star LB Raylen Wilson (Tallahassee, Fla.), decommitted from the Wolverines on June 28. Along with that, former head coach Lloyd Carr’s grandson CJ Carr committed to Notre Dame. Carr is a 2024 quarterback recruit that plays for Saline High School just outside of Ann Arbor and is leaving the state for the Fighting Irish. In less than a month, Michigan lost a 4-start linebacker who reopened his recruiting and one of the best players in the State of Michigan. All is not lost as 5-star quarterback Dante Moore from Detroit’s Martin Luther King High School has Michigan on his list of programs he is looking at. After his Elite 11 workouts at the Redondo Beach Union in California last week, Moore was mum on what he was going to do next in the recruiting process.
Michigan’s 2023 class only has eight commits currently and is ranked 51 overall. They have six 3-star players and two 4-star players with three of them from the State of Michigan. Adam Samaha, a 3-star from Ann Arbor’s Huron High School committed on November 25 as a kicker. Semaj Morgan, a wide receiver from West Bloomfield, Mich., is a 3-star that committed on December 1, 2021. The top player in the class is a 4-star from Dexter, Mich., in Cole Cabana at running back.
The class is far from being done but needs a lot of work to move into the top 10. Will Michigan gain 5-star recruit Moore from Detroit to push the class forward? It only takes one big recruit to set the stage and then others will follow. Time will tell if the big win over Ohio State will mean much in the grand scheme of things for the Wolverines in recruiting.
