LANSING, Mich. (MIRS News) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is beating all five of the Republican gubernatorial candidates outside of the margin of error, with the closest contender now nine points off the mark. That’s Ryan Kelley who is behind 50%-41% in the latest WDIV/Detroit News statewide poll.

The Governor holds an 11-point lead over Tudor Dixon, 12% over Kevin Rinke, 14% over Garrett Soldano and Ralph Rebandt is behind by 15%.

The Glengariff survey point pins one of the major reasons the Governor is ahead.

As Richard Czuba explained, “Roe v. Wade is helping to drive her numbers right now.”

Michigan Democrats were hoping the U.S. Supreme Court decision on the abortion issue would boomerang in their favor. If these numbers are accurate, that may be the case.

“When you look at her lead against her closest challenger, she is leading by 32 points amongst independent women and if you look at suburban voters, she’s got a 15-point lead,” he explained.

Czuba asked respondents how important the Roe v. Wade reversal decision was regarding their motivation to vote. 86% said it was important and of those 57% felt it was “very important.”

And he reports in the latter group, “Gretchen Whitmer leads by a margin of 68% to 27%,” over her closest competitor, Kelley.

He notes that the Republicans also view the ruling as important but, “they got what they wanted so they are not clamoring on this issue any more, unlike the Democrats who now are.”

The news is even more relevant in the context of the latest FiveThirtyEight analysis from this week, that found Whitmer is “clearly favored to win.” The service ran 40,000 simulated elections against Whitmer’s most likely general election opponent, which it concluded to be Kelley, and found Whitmer wins 91% of the time. The plurality of the wins was in the +10% category.

In related news, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a potential 2024 presidential candidate on the Democratic side, sent out a fundraising email for Whitmer and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers Wednesday.

He wrote that he vetoed anti-abortion legislation in his state. Evers and Whitmer have also taken actions to secure a woman’s right to choose in their states.

“I’m proud of our efforts to stop this shameful attack on our rights, but the fight is far from over,” wrote the chair of the Democratic Governors Association.
