DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Jace Jung was the first round MLB Draft Pick on Sunday night followed by Peyton Graham from Oklahoma in the second round. These two draft picks will be the future of the Detroit’s middle infield becoming teammates after playing against each other in the Big 12. Detroit drafted players after that to help in the infield and pitching.

Detroit took five infielders, 11 pitchers, and three outfielders. Of the 11 pitchers taken, three are left handed. Tory Melton, from San Diego State, was the top pitcher taken in the fourth round. He earned the Mountain West Co-Pitcher of the Year honors, was first-team All-Mountain West, and led the conference with a 2.07 ERA. This year he posted 67 strikeouts in with five wins.

After Jung and Graham were taken for infield help, Boston College’s Luke Gold was the third infielder chosen by Detroit. The No. 87 overall rated player in the MLB Draft of the Top 250 Draft Prospects, he had 62 hits, 37 RBI, and nine home runs and earned All-ACC second-team status with a .308 batting average.

Tennessee’s Seth Stephenson became the first outfielder chosen by Detroit in the seventh round. The utility player/OF played three years of college baseball with two at Temple College (Texas) and his junior year at Tennessee. His best tool, according to GoVOLS 247Sports is his speed and ability to move to the infield to play positions. He had a .408 on-base percentage with a.339 batting average and a .508 slugging percentage in 2022. His 22 extra-base hits led to 28 RBI and stealing 25 bases.
