DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Four home runs, including a grand slam, led to an opening series win over San Diego, 12-4. Eric Haase swatted a grand slam in the third inning breaking the scoring gates wide open for a 5-1 lead as the Tigers went on for the eight-run win.

Haase finished the game with two hits and four RBI. Jeimer Candelario added three hits (two home runs) and three RBI while Miguel Cabrera added a solo shot in the sixth for the 12th of the game.

Will Vest came in relief for 2.1 innings in the fifth recording two strikeouts and only one hit for the win. Drew Hutchison started the game going 4.1 innings with four strikeouts. Five pitchers in total were used as Detroit broke their three-game losing streak.

San Diego scored in the top of the third inning but Javier Baez tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly. Harold Castro came in for the first run and then Haase opened up the offense with the first of four Detroit home runs on the day. Taking a 1-0 count to right field, Haase made it 5-1 as Detroit scored 12 runs over the next four innings. They added four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth with 13 total hits in the game.

The two teams will square off in game two of the three-game series on Tuesday night at 7:10 p.m.
