ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Carter Payne, who left UM to play professionally after 2019-20, passed away on July 10 from a hit-and-run accident. Payne was based in Georgia playing for the Tormenta FC of the United Soccer League. The Academic All-Big Ten player in 2020 didn’t make an appearance at UM his sophomore year and played in 10 games on defense starting eight as a freshman. He was from Phoenix, Ariz., and played at the Barcelona Residency Academy in Casa Grande, Ariz.
From the UM soccer social media, “We are devastated to confirm the tragic loss of Carter Payne. We grieve the loss of our brother, teammate and extraordinary student-athlete. We extend our hearts and love to his family at this extremely tragic time.”

The South Georgia Tormenta FC’s statement said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Tormenta FC 2 defender David Carter Payne. A member of Tormenta FC 2’s 2022 USL League Two team, Payne was a tremendous athlete, teammate and friend, and he will be sorely missed by everyone involved at the club.”
