LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Michigan residents who work in the hospitality industry did not get the COVID-19 relief they originally expected.

The Michigan Legislature passed $45 million in funding in December to give $1,650 grants to laid-off hospitality workers.

However, those who are eligible are getting less than half of that $1,650 because more people applied than lawmakers anticipated.

The Employee Assistance Grants have been awarded to 55,961 people – split evenly at $793.41 per person.

Meanwhile, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer continues to box out the restaurant industry. Starting Friday, restaurants and bars can open dining rooms to 50% capacity with an 11 p.m. curfew.
