LANSING (MIRS News) – Michigan Republican Party Chair Laura Cox made it clear today to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson that she only wants one name on the 2020 Republican presidential primary ballot: President Donald J. Trump.

The President’s campaign, apparently, is the only one that contacted the Party about appearing on the Chair’s list of primary candidates. He also received the unanimous endorsement of the Michigan Republican State Committee.

“For the past three years, Michigan has flourished under President Trump’s leadership,” Cox said. “Our state has achieved record low unemployment, and for the first time in a generation manufacturing jobs are returning to Michigan . . . Our state and our nation will only grow stronger, safer and more prosperous over the next four years, and it is my honor to submit the President’s name for the primary.”

But under Michigan election law, Cox can’t limit the choices and neither can Benson once she’s made them. Late last week, Benson compiled a list of primary candidates based on “individuals generally advocated by the national news media,” which is what state law reads.

So, while Cox can add names to the list — which also includes former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and former U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh — Cox can’t eliminate names, even though Sanford suspended his campaign today.

According to election law, anyone on the list who doesn’t want to be on it has until 4 p.m. Dec. 13 to let the Secretary of State know. Republicans not on the list who want to be on it must file 11,398 voter signatures with Benson’s office by Dec. 13. Democrats must file 11,345.

A total of 18 Democratic candidates were included in Benson’s list of choices.

Michigan’s presidential primary is scheduled for Mar. 10.
