LANSING (Great Lakes News) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement in support of the White House’s potential ban on flavored vape products after banning their sale in Michigan last week.
“I’m glad this administration is doing the right thing and following Michigan’s lead to ban flavored vaping products,” Whitmer said. “This is great news for our kids, our families, and our overall public health.”

Whitmer issued the statement after President Donald Trump announced that the White House was considering banning flavored vape products nationally by issuing guidelines through the FDA. The FDA recommended the change in response to a large uptick in teen vaping and a recent outbreak in lung disease attributed to the misuses of vaporizers to smoke cannabis oils. According to the WSJ, the ban will include menthol and mint flavors.
“We are going to have to do something about it,” Trump told USA Today, describing vaping as a “new problem in the country.”
Whitmer’s support for the president comes particularly barbed, as Republicans in the House announced a potential challenge to Whitmer’s ban. Republicans claimed the move circumvented authority and lacked the proper oversight from a period of public comment. A national ban would make their efforts moot and potentially politically embarrassing.
“Right now, companies are getting our kids hooked on nicotine by marketing flavors like apple juice, bubble gum, and candy,” Whitmer said. “Banning these flavors is a bold step that will keep our kids healthy and safe from the harmful effects of vaping. I’m proud that Michigan has been a leader on this issue, and I’m ready to continue working to protect our kids and our public health.”
